Ancient Chinese coins: A brief history of Sung Dynasty coins

Eigtheen Emperors ruled during the Sung Dynasty, which was divided into 2 periods; the Northern Sung Dynasty (A.D. 960 - 1127) and the Southern Sung Dynasty (A.D. 1127 - 1279). The Sung coins casted during this period were subtle and complex with numerous varieties and vast number of calligraphic styles.
The founder of the Sung dynasty was Chao Kuang Yin, who rose from the rank of general to emperor. The first offical Ming Coin during his reign was the Sung Yuan Tong Bao. Later, the loss of the Northern territories resulted in the establishment of the Southern Sung Dyasty. The inscriptions of the Southern Sung coins inherited much of the style of the North with one key difference. Southern Sung coins bore the year of the mintage.
